Silver bay in the USA is welcoming four-wheelers in an attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records’ mark for the longest ATV / Quad Bike parade.

The All-Terrain Vehicle Association of Minnesota (ATVAM) has organized the event for Saturday, June 13. This is the second year of the event, after the group fell short with only 55 ATVs short of the record in 2008. Les Schermerhorn, chair of the parade, said there are over 1000 four-wheelers already pre-registered for this year’s attempt.

“It’s a wonderful thing to do, just getting that many ATVs together,” Schermerhorn said.

The current record is held by the Harlan County Ridgerunners in Evarts, Ky. with 1,138 ATVs participating in 2006. Schermerhorn said that she is confident they will break the record, and she encourages those who haven’t pre-registered to still come out for the parade.

“If we do break it, Kentucky says they’re going to try to take it away from us,” Schermerhorn said. “It’s kind of a rivalry thing going on.”

If they don’t break the record, she said, they will wait several years before trying again because holding the parade annually would ruin the excitement.

The parade route and strict Guinness regulations remain the same as last year’s. The parade must move along single file for two continuous miles, be counted at two different locations and be videotaped in three different locations.

Schermerhorn said if the record is broken, they will have to collect testimony from event and city officials and send it to the Guinness Book of World Records within a month, along with the videotapes.

Other events on Saturday include a Silver Bay Fire Department pancake feed at 6 a.m., helicopter rides at 10 a.m., an ATVAM Silent Auction at the Union Hall from 3 to 7 p.m., and an all-you-can-eat buffet at the Union Hall from 4 to 7 p.m.

Participants are also encouraged to spend the weekend exploring the trails around Silver bay on their ATVs.

Schermerhorn noted that no tickets or fines were issued during last year’s parade. She said that the event is not only about breaking the record, but about creating an educated, safe and welcoming environment for ATV enthusiasts statewide.

“It shows the state of Minnesota that we can be responsible riders,” she said, “And most of us are responsible riders.”
